Starting in November, Healthy Moms & Babes, a local outreach ministry whose mission is to improve infant survival, has begun spending one Monday per month located on the premises of Santa Maria’s East Price Hill office. Using their mobile van, Healthy Moms & Babes provides a number of resources and services to women. The services include pregnancy screenings, blood pressure and sugar testing, and enrolling mothers with young children in a free diaper bank. The staff, which includes a nurse and AmeriCorps volunteers, also takes the time to educate women on health and make referrals when deemed necessary. The van’s visits to Santa Maria have been some of the busiest and most productive according to Healthy Moms & Babes staff, and have been an amazing resource, particularly, for mothers in the Hispanic community in Price Hill. In the first three months, Healthy Moms and Babes has helped nearly 100 women with different health screenings and enrolled many of them in the free diaper bank. As more and more women have learned of this resource, the popularity of the van has grown in each of the three months.
