July 2016
For years Sarah had yearned for a GED, but barrier after barrier discouraged her from obtaining it. Until one day, walking down the street, Sarah noticed a sign outside of Santa Maria’s Literacy Center advertising for GED assistance. She took a chance, got enrolled in the program and began attending regular classes.
“It seemed like before Literacy Center West it was so hard for me to even get through to take my GED test, but they made it a whole lot easier for me.” In less than two months Sarah obtained her GED with flying colors.
Feeling empowered, Sarah decided her next step was to get good employment. She began regularly utilizing Santa Maria’s computer lab to search for jobs, along with attending several Workforce Development Employment Workshops that helped her with applications, resumes, and interviews. Following a job lead from Santa Maria staff, Sarah found employment which she kept for over a year until it was no longer a good fit for her.
Today Sarah is steadily employed as a Childcare Provider doing exactly what she loves – working with toddlers and infants. As a successful, independent young woman, Sarah proves that with a little support, and a strong will, one can achieve their dreams. When asked what advice she has for others, Sarah says “Everybody’s smart. Just believe. Believe in yourself.”
